The benchmark every military isekai gets measured against
GATE is the story everyone compares other 'modern army in a fantasy world' books to, and there's a reason. The premise — a gate opens in Tokyo and the JSDF marches through — is executed with a procedural seriousness most isekai never even attempt.
It's equal parts geopolitical thriller, culture-clash comedy, and unapologetic Self-Defense-Force wish fulfillment, and your mileage will vary on that last part. But the scale, the tactics, and the sheer commitment to taking its own world seriously make it stand apart from the pack. If you only read one military isekai, make it this one.
